Baby Check-Up Schedule

Because babies grow and develop quickly during the first few years of their lives, specialized pediatric care and regular check-ups are important to your child’s health. At AGC Pediatrics, we follow the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended baby check-up schedule, which suggests that babies get wellness check-ups at birth, 3-5 days after birth, and then at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 months of age.

During each of these routine visits, the doctor will measure your newborn’s head, length and weight to ensure that his or her growth and development falls within a normal range. The doctor will also monitor developmental milestones and perform a behavioral assessment. Physical examinations consist of a thorough examination of your baby’s eyes, ears, mouth, skin, heart, lungs, abdomen, hips, legs and genitalia.

 What to Expect
A typical schedule for a newborn’s wellness visits and immunizations includes:

  • 1 month. Your pediatrician will take measurements, conduct a psychosocial/behavioral test, and perform a basic physical exam.
  • 2 months. Your newborn will undergo the same basic examinations and receive his or her first round of immunizations, including the RV, DTaP, Hib, PCV and IPV.
  • 4 months.  The 4 month check-up will consist of a physical examination, behavioral assessment, and the second set of immunizations, including RV, DTaP, Hib, PCV and IPV.
  • 6 months. During the 6 month wellness check, your pediatrician will perform a physical examination, behavioral assessment and the third set of immunizations.
  • 9 months.  The 9 month check-up includes a more detailed examination of baby’s milestones and behavior, a basic physical exam, and immunizations.
  • 12 months. On your newborn’s first birthday, the pediatrician will take your baby’s measurements, perform a basic exam, and compete a behavioral assessment. Your baby will also receive a series of immunizations, including Hib, PCV, MMR, and the varicella vaccine.
  • 15 months. During the 15 month check-up, your doctor will perform the usual exams, and your child will get any immunizations that he or she has not yet received.
  • 18 months. The 18 month screening will include the usual exams as well as an autism screening. Your child may need more doses of hepatitis B, DTaP, IPV and hepatitis A if he or she has not previously received them.
  • 24 months. On your child’s second birthday, he or she may have a hematocrit or hemoglobin screening, a lead screening, and a TB test in addition to the usual check-ups. Your child will also need any vaccines that he or she has not yet received.

Immunizations and Your Newborn

Vaccinations protect your child from illnesses that could be extremely harmful if caught. It is important to keep your child up to date with his or her immunizations so that he or she is protected from these particular illnesses.

If you have any questions concerning this schedule or would like more detail about each visit, please feel free to contact AGC Pediatrics with your questions or concerns. Call (706) 625-5900 to make an appointment at our one of our Cartersville or Calhoun locations.
