Teaching Kids about Hygiene – AGC Pediatric

Teaching your children personal hygiene is vital for their short-term and long-term health, and it’s an important building block for self-esteem.

Because personal hygiene must be done regularly, most children view it as a hassle and are very resistant. Hygiene is very effective at preventing illnesses, but how can you get your children interested in making it part of their routine?
The experts at AGC Pediatrics recommend incorporating fun and games when teaching children about personal hygiene, so they create positive associations with it.

Sing While Washing Your Hands

Washing hands is important for preventing the transfer of germs and bacteria that cause the cold, the flu, and other easily transferred illnesses. It’s especially important for children to wash their hands before eating, after using the restroom and after blowing their nose.

Get your child excited to wash their hands by teaching them to sing while they do it. Happy Birthday works well because it’s easy to remember, and it’s the perfect length for washing hands.

Also try using soaps that come in bottles shaped like favorite movie and TV characters or soaps that foam or bubble.

Turn Bath Time into Play Time

Rubber duckies are your friend when you want your toddler to take a bath. Bath toys that float are great for keeping children amused and distracted while you gently scrub them down.

Bubble baths are also a great way to make bath time fun, especially when your tot realizes they can use the bubbles to create their very own beard. When it’s time to shampoo and condition your child’s hair, have a hand mirror ready, so you can turn them into a rock star with a Mohawk.

Get Creative for Brushing Teeth

Brushing your child’s teeth is important to prevent cavities, expensive dentist bills, and dental problems down the road. However, some children have a hard time brushing their teeth regularly.

There are more choices than ever before when it comes to toothbrushes and toothpaste. Get your child excited about brushing their teeth by letting them pick their favorite flavor and a toothbrush that looks like their favorite character. Some toothbrushes even play songs now to encourage children to brush their teeth.

Toddlers love to mimic what their parents are doing. Get down on your child’s level and show them how you brush your teeth. You can even challenge them to a battle of the brushes by seeing who can create more toothpaste bubbles.
