Helping Your Child Cope with ADHD Symptoms

Although ADHD may present symptoms at any age, it is most commonly diagnosed in children. Childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, is a condition that describes children who are impulsive, hyperactive, restless, and frequently inattentive. ADHD typically presents itself in one of three ways:

  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive
Excess activity and impulsiveness are often experienced by children with this type of ADHD.

  • Predominantly Inattentive
Describes children who find focus and concentration difficult.
  • Combined Type
Children with this type of ADHD experience combined hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity.

At AGC Pediatrics, a faith-based practice in Cartersville and Calhoun, GA, our pediatricians work closely with parents who suspect their children may be displaying ADHD symptoms.

Identify ADHD Symptoms in Your Child

When diagnosing ADHD, the medical professionals at AGC Pediatrics analyze your child's behavior in multiple settings, such as at school and at home. For an accurate ADHD diagnosis, similar behaviors must be reported in multiple settings. Common symptoms of ADHD are categorized by the predominant emotions and actions displayed, as they refer to the different types of ADHD, and include:
  • Impulsiveness. Children who suffer from ADHD symptoms related to impulsiveness often have difficulty waiting in line, completing complex tasks, or controlling emotions such as frustration or anger.
  • Inattentiveness. Children who struggle with inattentiveness may have trouble focusing on or remembering details.
  • Hyperactivity. Hyperactive children often have difficulty remaining still and calm, waiting for their turn to speak, or controlling emotions.
In some cases, children with ADHD do not display any of these symptoms, but rather just seem quiet. Speaking to a medical professional at AGC Pediatrics may help you determine if further examinations are needed for your child. Children often display symptoms common for ADHD, and only a medical professional may diagnose this behavioral condition.

Tips for Managing Your Child's ADHD Symptoms

Children with ADHD typically require more instruction and structure. These tips may help you manage your child's ADHD symptoms:

  • Make sure that your child gets plenty of exercise.
  • Be clear and consistent with behavior rules.
  • Provide consequences for negative behavior, and offer rewards for positive behavior.
  • Encourage good behaviors through affection and support.
