Why Does My Child Need an ADD Doctor?

As continued research reveals more about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), more children are being diagnosed with this disorder. The American Psychiatric Association states that the neurobehavioral condition Attention Deficit Disorder, also known as inattentive ADHD, is characterized by a child’s inattention and inability to concentrate.

As a parent, though, how do you know that your child suffers from this serious behavioral disorder and is not simply acting out? At AGC Pediatrics in Calhoun and Cartersville, GA our board-certified pediatricians provide support for parents and children suffering from ADD.

Doctor-assisted ADD Therapy in Calhoun & Cartersville, GA

Prompt diagnosis often aids in the reversal of serious ADD symptoms.  At AGC Pediatrics, our ADD doctors work closely with our in-office clinical psychologist to determine an ADD diagnosis. Our ADD doctors provide therapy options which often vary with age, and may include:

Behavioral Therapy
For children aged 4 to 5 years, behavioral therapy is typically the first treatment option. During this treatment, our behavioral therapist works closely with children to identify and minimize ADD symptoms.

If the child does not respond to behavioral therapy, our board-certified pediatricians may prescribe methylphenidate to alleviate the symptoms, but medication is a last resort for children in this age group.

ADD Medication
Children between the ages of 6 and 11 typically receive FDA-approved ADD medication as well as behavior modification therapy. Our physicians also work closely with the child’s school administration because the school environment is a vital part of any ADD treatment option.

Our ADD doctors also typically prescribe FDA-approved medication for patients between the ages of 12 and 18. Behavioral therapy may also be combined for adolescent patients, and it is recommended that these treatment options work in conjunction to alleviate the symptoms of ADD.

At AGC Pediatrics in Calhoun and Cartersville, GA, our board-certified pediatricians understand that Attention Deficit Disorder presents great difficulty and strain for parents, children, and teachers. Our goal is to provide a personalized treatment plan for our patients diagnosed with ADD to help them succeed in their academic careers and social endeavors.
